The Celebrations

A Sikh wedding is a beautiful tapestry of sacred rituals, joyous celebrations, and cherished traditions passed down through generations

Our wedding week will honor these beautiful Punjabi traditions with ceremonies held across families. Each event carries deep spiritual significance and brings loved ones together in celebration. Below is a guide to what each ceremony represents.

Maiyan ceremony with turmeric
Sacred Blessing

Maiyan

The Maiyan is an intimate and sacred ceremony where turmeric paste mixed with mustard oil is lovingly applied to the bride and groom by married women from the family. This ancient ritual is believed to purify, bless, and bring radiance to the couple before their wedding day.

During this time, the bride and groom traditionally stay home, beginning their spiritual preparation for marriage.

Art & Celebration

Mehndi

The Mehndi ceremony is a joyous celebration where intricate henna designs are applied to the bride's hands and feet. These beautiful patterns symbolize joy, beauty, and the deep bond between the couple. It's believed that the darker the mehndi, the stronger the love.

Friends and family gather for music, dancing, and festivities while the bride is adorned with elaborate designs that often include hidden initials of the groom.

Night of Joy

Jaggo

Jaggo, meaning "wake up," is a lively nighttime celebration that announces the upcoming wedding to the community. Traditionally, female relatives carry a decorated copper pot (gagger) filled with candles or oil lamps through the streets, singing folk songs called Boliyan.

The energy is electric as everyone dances, sings, and celebrates late into the night with dhol drums setting the rhythm.

The Sacred Wedding

Anand Karaj

The Anand Karaj, meaning "blissful union," is the sacred Sikh wedding ceremony held in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib. The couple circles the holy scripture four times while the Laavan (wedding hymns) are recited, each round representing a stage of love and spiritual growth.

This deeply spiritual ceremony unites two souls before Waheguru, with the couple making vows of mutual devotion, support, and commitment to walking life's path together.
